Where the delay comes from
The encoder on the PC, the radio link, and the buffer in the headphones each add a few milliseconds. A weak or crowded link forces a larger buffer, which is why delay gets worse in a busy room.
Video players usually hide it by delaying the picture. Games cannot, which is why the same headphones feel fine for a film and late in a shooter.
What helps on Windows
- 1Move closer to the PC and remove obstacles. A stronger link needs less buffering.
- 2Turn off other 2.4 GHz devices you are not using, and keep USB 3 drives away from any wireless receiver.
- 3Close apps holding the headset microphone. Call mode changes the audio path and its timing.
- 4Reconnect the headphones after all of that, so the link is negotiated fresh.
If your headphones support several codecs, the one in use is chosen by Windows and the device together. There is no Windows setting that forces a different one.
What does not help
Audio enhancements, spatial sound and third-party effects add processing rather than remove it. If you are chasing latency, turn them off.
Sample-rate changes in the sound control panel do not shorten a Bluetooth buffer.
When wireless is the wrong tool
For competitive play, a wired headset or a dedicated low-latency wireless dongle stays ahead of any Bluetooth link. That is a property of the transport, not of your PC.
